Getting around in a wheel chair can be a big challange. Wheelchair bound personal scan sitll apply for a special drivers liscense. If one passes the visual, cognitive, and mobility test they can qualify for a drivers liscense.
People who depend on wheelchairs for mobility no longer have to depend on others for transportation over long distances. Motor vehicles can be outfitted for individuals who are wheelchairbound. A variety of options exist for modifying a motor vehicle. Typically, minivans are modified to include a ramp, where the wheelchair dependant individual wheels themselves to the driver seat. Another type of modificaiton includes the installation of a lift where the wheelchair and person are actually lifted into the drivers area of the vehicle. Other modifications to seat beat and hand controlled gas/brake levers are installed. Check with your insurance/benefits companies as you may be eligible for some compensation. In some states/provinces, an individual can get full coverage for a modified motor vehicle for wheelchair bound individuals. This is important to note as modification can be costly. There are some people who have taken the matter into their own hands and are modifying their own motor vehicles. Although this may save money, it may not follow the motor vehicle legislation in your state/province. Be sure to check with your province/state for any permits required to conduct this type of motor vehicle modification.
